  • Bigge Transports Historic Gun Barrel at Rodeo Beach, California

www.Bigge.com Bigge Crane and Rigging was recently in the Marin Headlands, helping to maneuver a WWII-era gun barrel up a steep and winding hillside to a historic Battery overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Bigge's team of project managers and engineers drafted a plan that utilized a 500-ton capacity gantry system to load a 16' wide dual-lane platform trailer with the gun barrel for over-the-road transport. The move originated at the Army Depot in Hawthorne, NV then proceeded to the Marin Headlands and consisted of a four-man crew, two tractors, and the trailer. The crew covered 549 miles over the course of three transport shifts. Additionally, CHP officers were required for escort once entering California. The 120-ton, 16" gun barrel was originally a part of the USS Missouri and in pla...

World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube Los Angeles, California, USA Travel Guide http://bit.ly/18CgG5A Transport in Los Angeles, California, USA Public transport: Despite LA being one of the most car-oriented cities in the world, public transport can be a good way to get around. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)operates one of the largest fleets in the nation - 200 Metro Bus routes as well as five Metro rail lines, including subway and light rail. A monthly, weekly or Metro Day Pass offers unlimited rides on Metro Bus or Metro Rail, or passengers can buy 10 Metro tokens, which can be used for one-way fares on either bus or rail. Many hotels, convenience and grocery stores and Metro Customer Centers sell Metro passes. Downtown Los Angeles also has its own bus system called DASH, operated by LADOT Taxis: Taxis are readily available and there are ranks at major hotels, but they cannot be hailed on the street. The size of Los Angeles makes them expensive and impractical for cross-town journeys but they are useful for night journeys within one area. Tipping at 15-20% is expected. There are nine franchised taxi operators in the city. Visitors should look for the official Los Angeles Taxicab Seal before getting in, as those without it have no legal authorisation to operate. In Beverly Hills, cab companies are the Beverly Hills Cab Company (tel: 1 800 273 6611) and Independent Taxi Company (tel: 1 800 521 8294). Elsewhere, try Bell Cab (tel: 1 888 235 5222). Driving: The distances between LA's various points can seem daunting, but it is pretty easy to get around by car. Plan your journey in advance and get to know a map of the major freeways or rent a car with GPS navigation. Other streets are laid out on a grid system and easy to navigate. Freeways are well marked, but jammed during rush hours. Most have designated car pool lanes for cars carrying more than one person. Merge in and out of them when road markings permit and take care not to get stuck in one and miss your exit. LA drivers rarely use turn signals so stay alert. For on-street meter parking (they take quarters and sometimes credit cards), read all signs carefully as there is a complicated system of days or hours when parking is not allowed for street cleaning etc. Illegally parked cars are ticketed and may be towed. Meters are usually free after 1800. Valet park at many restaurants for a nominal fee. Car hire: Drivers must be at least 25 years of age, depending on company policy. Optional CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) insurance is always recommended if not already covered by the driver's own policy. Bicycle hire: Away from the freeways, Los Angeles is cycle friendly, with designated cycle lanes criss-crossing the city and running along the beachfront. Topanga Creek Bicycles hires out mountain bikes and will point you in the direction of some great trails in the Santa Monica Mountains.. Perry's Beach Cafe, 2400 and 2600 Oceanfront Walk, Santa Monica, has bikes, tricycles and skates for hire and easy access to the bike paths either side of Santa Monica Pier. ========================= Los Angeles Videos, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Tourism, Los Angeles Travel Guide, Los Angeles Vacation, Los Angeles tours, Los Angeles Attractions, Los Angeles Restaurants, Los Angeles Shopping, Los Angeles Transport, Los Angeles Museums, California, California Travel Guide, California Tourism, California Vacation, United States of America

www.Bigge.com Bigge Crane and Rigging was recently in the Marin Headlands, helping to maneuver a WWII-era gun barrel up a steep and winding hillside to a historic Battery overlooking the San Francisco Bay. The 120-ton, 16" gun barrel was originally a part of the USS Missouri and in place during the surrender of WWII. The barrel will now rest on a permanent display outside of the empty turret area in Marin, where hikers and other visitors can view it alongside the Battery. On-site, Bigge trans-loaded the barrel to two four-line, bolstered platform trailers and then used a push and pull tractor to navigate the road. It was mandatory that this equipment be used to navigate the steep slope and hairpin turns that provide the only access the Battery. Once at the setting location, a 500-ton capacity gantry with a side-shift system was required to offload, side shift and set the barrel in a tightly constrained location on the hillside. This high profile job required extensive planning and engineering support. Considering the length and weight of the piece and the grade of the hill, every precaution had to be looked after to ensure the safety of all crew members. Bigge's experience with oversized, heavy hauls allowed our team to complete this job safely and on time. If you have a heavy transport project coming up, call or email Troy Kussmaul, at 510-638-8100 or tkussmaul@bigge.com.

t's like the Jetsons' tunnel, and it will whisk you to your destination in minutes. Elon Musk promises to unveil his transportation vision on Aug. 12. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is all over the place lately, creating buzz about his proposed "Hyperloop" — a pneumatic tube transportation system that would shuttle people from Los Angeles to New York in under an hour. Sounds kind of like one of the whimsical contraptions on "The Jetsons," right? Despite all the hype, no one knows exactly what Musk's vision entails or whether it's viable. He has dropped a few hints, however. BETTER THAN HIGH SPEED RAIL "Is there a better way to travel from downtown LA to downtown San Francisco, that's better than the high-speed rail that's being proposed?" Musk asked at the AllThingsD's D11 conference earlier this year, referring to a California high-speed rail project that would whisk passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in under three hours. Musk said that rail line "would actually be the slowest bullet train in the world and the most expensive per mile in the world." "These are not the superlatives we are looking for," he said. Enter the Hyperloop, "a cross between a Concorde, a rail gun and an air hockey table," according to Musk. "Even if I am sort of wrong about the economic assumptions behind the Hyperloop, it would still be a really fun ride," Musk told the audience.

Plants have two different types of 'transport' tissue. Xylem transports water and solutes from the roots to the leaves, phloem transports food from the leaves to the rest of the plant. Transpiration is the process by which water evaporates from the leaves, which results in more water being drawn up from the roots. No heart, no blood and no circulation, but plants do need a transport system to move food, water and minerals around. They use two different systems – xylem moves water and solutes from the roots to the leaves – phloem moves food substances from leaves to the rest of the plant. Both of these systems are rows of cells that make continuous tubes running the full length of the plant. Xylem cells have extra reinforcement in their cell walls, and this helps to support the weight of the plant. For this reason, the transport systems are arranged differently in root and stem – in the root it has to resist forces that could pull the plant out of the ground. In the stem it has to resist compression and bending forces caused by the weight of the plant and the wind. Transpiration explains how water moves up the plant against gravity in tubes made of dead xylem cells without the use of a pump. Water on the surface of spongy and palisade cells (inside the leaf) evaporates and then diffuses out of the leaf. This is called transpiration. More water is drawn out of the xylem cells inside the leaf to replace what's lost. As the xylem cells make a continuous tube from the leaf, down the stem to the roots, this acts like a drinking straw, producing a flow of water and dissolved minerals from roots to leaves. Factors that speed up transpiration will also increase the rate of water uptake from the soil. When water is scarce, or the roots are damaged, it increases a plant’s chance of survival if the transpiration rate can be slowed down. Plants can do this themselves by wilting, or it can be done artificially, like removing some of the leaves from cuttings before they have chance to grow new roots.
