Tesla CEO Elon Musk is all over the place lately, creating buzz about his proposed "Hyperloop" — a pneumatic tube transportation system that would shuttle people from Los Angeles to New York in under an hour. Sounds kind of like one of the whimsical contraptions on "The Jetsons," right? Despite all the hype, no one knows exactly what Musk's vision entails or whether it's viable. He has dropped a few hints, however. BETTER THAN HIGH SPEED RAIL "Is there a better way to travel from downtown LA to downtown San Francisco, that's better than the high-speed rail that's being proposed?" Musk asked at the AllThingsD's D11 conference earlier th...

Plants have two different types of 'transport' tissue. Xylem transports water and solutes from the roots to the leaves, phloem transports food from the leaves to the rest of the plant. Transpiration is the process by which water evaporates from the leaves, which results in more water being drawn up from the roots. No heart, no blood and no circulation, but plants do need a transport system to move food, water and minerals around. They use two different systems – xylem moves water and solutes from the roots to the leaves – phloem moves food substances from leaves to the rest of the plant. Both of these systems are rows of cells that make continuous tubes running the full length of the plant. Xylem cells have extra reinforcement in their cell walls, and this helps to support the weight of ...

www.Bigge.com Bigge Crane and Rigging was recently in the Marin Headlands, helping to maneuver a WWII-era gun barrel up a steep and winding hillside to a historic Battery overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Bigge's team of project managers and engineers drafted a plan that utilized a 500-ton capacity gantry system to load a 16' wide dual-lane platform trailer with the gun barrel for over-the-road transport. The move originated at the Army Depot in Hawthorne, NV then proceeded to the Marin Headlands and consisted of a four-man crew, two tractors, and the trailer. The crew covered 549 miles over the course of three transport shifts. Additionally, CHP officers were required for escort once entering California. The 120-ton, 16" gun barrel was originally a part of the USS Missouri and in place during the surrender of WWII. The barrel will now rest on a permanent display outside of the empty turret area in Marin, where hikers and other visitors can view it alongside the Battery. On-site, Bigge trans-loaded the barrel to two four-line, bolstered platform trailers and then used a push and pull tractor to navigate the road. It was mandatory that this equipment be used to navigate the steep slope and hairpin turns that provide the only access the Battery. Once at the setting location, a 500-ton capacity gantry with a side-shift system was required to offload, side shift and set the barrel in a tightly constrained location on the hillside. This high profile job required extensive planning and engineering support. Considering the length and weight of the piece and the grade of the hill, every precaution had to be looked after to ensure the safety of all crew members. Bigge's experience with oversized, heavy hauls allowed our team to complete this job safely and on time. If you have a heavy transport project coming up, call or email Troy Kussmaul, at 510-638-8100 or tkussmaul@bigge.com.

Mercedes F 015 The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is held throughout Las Vegas at the beginning of every year and is one of the biggest electronics show in the world. Companies from all over the world meet to show off their latest innovations. Car companies started coming as exhibitors about a decade ago, and this year almost every major car company showed up, including Ford, Honda, Hyundai, and Mercedes. The latter company debuted several self-driving vehicles, including the F 0158 full concept car that is a myriad of futuristic technological innovations. The car is fully autonomous and is powered, in theory, by a fuel cell hybrid powertrain for up to 684 emission free miles. The interior features a lounge style cabin with swiveling front seats that automatically turn to the optimal angle for entering and exiting the vehicle. A remarkable concept to be sure, but it will take a long time to get from being technically possible to being commercially viable. We probably won’t see the F 015 anytime soon, though it's a safe bet that we will see self-driving vehicles in commercial use in the near future. Autonomous technology will change the way cars are used, from the way they are driven to the way they are integrated and used within society. 5. AV Road Trip The Alliance for Transportation Innovation or ATI announced plans early this year to have a coast to coast autonomous vehicle road trip that will begin in late January in Atlanta, Georgia. Stops on the AV tour include New Orleans, Arlington Texas, Los Angeles and San Jose California. ATI hopes to bring autonomous and other innovative technologies into the transportation industry as quickly as possible to safely and efficiently deliver goods while eliminating the human errors that cause horrific and fatal accidents across the world. 4. RideTap Developers launched a pilot for this real-time ride options app in Portland, Oregon in May of 2016. The app could offer users a list of ride options in their area, from a bus to an Uber to a bike sharing option and find them the quickest possible, or most affordable route to get the user where they need to go. The app is hoping to capitalize off of the trend of more and more young people being inclined to use public transportation or ride sharing options as opposed to owning a vehicle. 3. Robot Taxi in Paris Sea Bubbles will be flying on the Seine River in Paris, at least for test runs this spring. A yachtsman and a Swedish windsurfer came up with this bubble shaped transportation alternative that can fit four passengers and a driver. The vehicle would be an app and work much like Uber or Lyft. So far funding has been promising as the creators have been able to raise over five hundred thousand dollars from various backers, including the French government. The boats, which look like something out of Minority Report, float two feet above the water and can reach speeds of nearly twenty miles per hour. Once the company fully develops the Sea Bubble, they hope to go to other cities like London or Geneva. The propulsion system of the craft is powered by electricity, making it zero emission and soundless. If tests go well and the company that built the Sea Bubble secures more money, we could be seeing them around the world in the future. The creators hope to come up with a viable version of the Sea Bubble that is entirely operated by a robot. 2. TomTom Go TomTom has been making car navigation products for years, and their newest GPS device, which the company unveiled early this year is incredible. The TomTom Go has software that can be updated using Wi-Fi with no computer connectivity. The device can learn driver’s habits and predict their destinations. It becomes familiar with regularly driven commutes and can provide alternate routes based on traffic situations. They also integrate with smartphones by reading text messages out loud and allowing hands-free calling. 1. Pilotless Drone The EHang personal minicopter is designed to transport one human being without the use of a pilot. The passenger would choose a point on a map to travel to, and the drone would comply. All that the passenger would have to do after that is sit and wait to arrive at their destination. The vehicle was unveiled early last year at CES and caused quite a stir. While experts are unsure if the vehicle and transportation system would catch on with a price tag of at least two hundred thousand dollars, the drone was given test clearance by the state of Nevada in June.

t's like the Jetsons' tunnel, and it will whisk you to your destination in minutes. Elon Musk promises to unveil his transportation vision on Aug. 12. BETTER THAN HIGH SPEED RAIL "Is there a better way to travel from downtown LA to downtown San Francisco, that's better than the high-speed rail that's being proposed?" Musk asked at the AllThingsD's D11 conference earlier this year, referring to a California high-speed rail project that would whisk passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in under three hours. Musk said that rail line "would actually be the slowest bullet train in the world and the most expensive per mile in the world." "These are not the superlatives we are looking for," he said. Enter the Hyperloop, "a cross between a Concorde, a rail gun and an air hockey table," according to Musk. "Even if I am sort of wrong about the economic assumptions behind the Hyperloop, it would still be a really fun ride," Musk told the audience.

Xylem cells have extra reinforcement in their cell walls, and this helps to support the weight of the plant. For this reason, the transport systems are arranged differently in root and stem – in the root it has to resist forces that could pull the plant out of the ground. In the stem it has to resist compression and bending forces caused by the weight of the plant and the wind. Transpiration explains how water moves up the plant against gravity in tubes made of dead xylem cells without the use of a pump. Water on the surface of spongy and palisade cells (inside the leaf) evaporates and then diffuses out of the leaf. This is called transpiration. More water is drawn out of the xylem cells inside the leaf to replace what's lost. As the xylem cells make a continuous tube from the leaf, down the stem to the roots, this acts like a drinking straw, producing a flow of water and dissolved minerals from roots to leaves. Factors that speed up transpiration will also increase the rate of water uptake from the soil. When water is scarce, or the roots are damaged, it increases a plant’s chance of survival if the transpiration rate can be slowed down. Plants can do this themselves by wilting, or it can be done artificially, like removing some of the leaves from cuttings before they have chance to grow new roots.
